We are two practicing physicians who strongly support a petition gaining traction on Change.org to eliminate the American Board of Internal Medicine’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirement. By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN We are in turbulent times in healthcare. Planning in nursing leadership today can be challenging. As one of my nurse leader colleagues recently told me – I keep learning that so much of what we have done in the past won’t work in the future. Barbie is having a moment, marketers agree. This weekend, many of us will buy movie tickets (yes, to see “real” movies in “real” brick-and-mortar cinemas) to see both the new film Oppenheimer along with the Barbie movie. So many movie-goers will be making it a double-feature experience that started as a meme, the portmanteau “Barbenheimer,” to mark the cultural-phenomenon moment.

Shutterstock | Alexander Raths Nurses know best the importance of taking care of oneself—from logging enough sleep each night to taking it easy when a case of something more than just the Mondays starts to rear its ugly head. So—why aren’t nurses taking a page from their own book. Or, more accurately, why can’t they? As it turns out, your fellow nurses had quite a bit to say in response to that very question on the ScrubsMag Facebook page.

I am worried about the state of medical science and our journals. At the risk of sounding naive, I want to believe that people who choose academic medicine do so to answer important scientific questions. I’ve traveled the world and met academics. Many of them impress me as serious people trying to advance the field. But that observation is hard to square with some of the studies that make it into big journals—and then into the lay press.
Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN Like many of you, I watch the news about the push for mandated staffing ratios. Nurse advocates confidently tell legislators that with 5.2 licensed nurses (if that number is even accurate), there are more than enough nurses to staff the US health system. The only reason they are […] The post Mandated Nurse Staffing Ratios appeared first on Emerging Nurse Leader.
When considering a career in healthcare, there are many options to choose from. Two high-demand healthcare professions are medical assistants and patient care technicians. While both roles involve providing care to patients, there are key differences in training, job responsibilities, and career opportunities.
“Digital technologies offer tremendous potential for shifting from traditional medical routines to remote medicine,” with the role of wearables playing a growing role in the new home care for healthy aging. But what are the challenges of deploying this promising tech with older people keen to be independent at home? Nurses with disabilities find the nursing industry offers excellent career paths that help them fulfill their goals, regardless of disability. Whether nurses have a disability before they enter the workforce or become disabled after their licensure, they are needed to fill jobs and help broaden the diversity of the nursing workforce, says Karen McCulloh RN, BS , co-founder and co-director of the National Organization of Nurses with Disabilities (NOND).
Image: iStockphoto | Thinkstock Regrets, I’ve had a few…but then again, too few to…wait, what? Nurses make mistakes. Lots of them. Most of the time we catch ’em before they become a big deal. Maybe you’ve pulled a medicine at the wrong time or called a patient by the wrong name, or done something vaguely harebrained that won’t necessarily cause harm, but will cause embarrassment.
I am at the lake, in Kentucky, with family, ages 2 to 86 years. We have no Wi-Fi. The cell signal is weak. It rained—a lot. That changes things. I picked up my Kindle (40% battery left) and opened to one of my favorite “books” — the entire collection of the works of Mark Twain. At the suggestion of Walter Kirn and Matt Taibbi, I read the Twain short story. “The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg” Walter Kirn called it more of a fable.
By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN A wise mentor once told me that just because you are not hearing about something as a leader does not mean it is not happening. I have realized throughout my career that this is sage advice. A nurse manager recently told me about her CNO, who had […] The post Tuning Into Information You May Not Want to Hear appeared first on Emerging Nurse Leader.

Physician: “This will feel like a pinch.” Translation: “This will feel like I’m shooting you with a small-caliber handgun in slow motion.” Physician: “The patient presents with an interesting medical history…” Translation: ”Way too much to go into here; check out the previous doctor’s dictation.
In our last podcast , Vinay and I discussed the problem with medical journals. This was in response to a column I wrote about four fatally flawed studies that appeared in the most prominent journals. The commenter is an established academic who will remain nameless because his success depends on journals publishing his work. Was disappointed that in the most recent sensible med podcast — you guys didn't mention what I think is the biggest conflict of all and reason we don't get fair judgin
By Rose O. Sherman, EdD, RN, NEA-BC For years, nurse leaders never thought much about teamwork. It seemed like such a natural part of nursing. Over the past couple of years, nurse managers are seeing changes in how many younger nurses view teamwork and collaboration. Some nurses have no interest in being team players. They […] The post A Team First Mindset appeared first on Emerging Nurse Leader.

The definition of “convenience” in the eyes of patients, consumers, and caregivers is multi-faceted, with the concept of “location” shifting both physically and digitally. We learn this in new research from JLL , the global real estate services company. “Why is a real estate services company doing research into consumers’ views on health care?
Nurses are astute clinicians often endowed with a keen helping of intuitive discernment. This ability to sense that something is wrong — or about to go wrong — has likely saved countless patients’ lives over centuries of nursing care. Whatever it is and wherever it comes from, a nurse’s intuition is something we can choose to pay heed to and to increasingly nurture, sharpen, and trust as the years go by.
stocksy |Lumina Nurses, you work hard—harder than most. And we don’t need to tell you that those carefree “sand and sun moments” come few and far between. It sure is a shame when a limited budget or an ultra-rigid schedule puts a rush on your long-awaited sabbatical.
What I have enjoyed most about writing for Sensible Medicine has been the give and take with our readers. Whether it is in the comment section, emails, or essay responses, I have been thrilled by the thoughtful and often challenging responses. I am lucky enough to be at a point in my career when I could switch from journals to substack where this give and take is possible.

If you’ve seen an increase in your paycheck in the past few years––and hopefully you have––you are part of an overall trend of increases in salaries for nurses. And, as you might expect, some of that has to do with the effects of the COVID pandemic. “We’ve seen an increase in nursing salaries, particularly since the pandemic,” says Katie Boston-Leary, PhD, MBA, MHA, RN, NEA-BC, director of nursing programs and co-lead for Project Firstline at the American Nurses Association (ANA).
Shutterstock | Photographee.eu The biggest issue in nursing isn’t training or hours. It’s staffing. We , as a profession, have become so used to short-staffing and double shifts that having less-than-horrible staffing is cause for celebration. Horrible staffing saves money, and let’s face it: Management’s chief concern (outside of Press Ganey scores) is money.
A few years ago, I put a pithy slide up on twitter. The slide was meant for new medical student graduates about to start residency. I came up with this list after reflecting on what did and did not work for me during my training – at least when viewed from the proverbial retrospectoscope. 1. Immerse yourself – residency is when you get your 10,000 hours 2.
