In many EDs, nurses also perform triage, which involves categorizing patients according to the urgency of their needs. Many emergency nurses also pursue additional training and certifications, such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), which further enhance their skills.
They will need to know how to treat catastrophic injuries or a heart attack one day and a person experiencing intense pain with no apparent cause the next, so an emergency nurse’s criticalthinking skills must be sharp as they will need to triage patients constantly and in accordance with changing conditions.
Professionals with criticalthinking skills, compassion and an understanding of the criminal justice system are encouraged to apply. Some roles will require you to obtain a certification as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE). While it takes some training to become a forensic nurse, the field is growing.
