Early shifts turned into late-night ones, and I was content even just volunteering to do the repetitive tasks of venepuncture and cannulation in an overflowing A&E triage. I threw myself into every opportunity that arose, like a starving child who hadn’t eaten in months – the clinical skills, examinations, history-taking.
